Have you ever noticed how a single color can create incredible depth, drama, and emotion? This week’s acrylic painting project explores the power of monochromatic painting. Create an entire artwork using black, white, and one additional color of your choice.
A monochromatic palette helps artists focus on what truly makes a painting successful: value, light, shadow, form, and contrast. Without relying on many colors, you’ll learn to make your subject come alive through careful observation and thoughtful brushwork.

Materials
- Titanium White
- Mars Black
- One additional color of your choice:
- Ultramarine Blue
- Quinacridone Red
- Cadmium Yellow
- Sap Green
- Dioxazine Purple
- Burnt Sienna (optional warm neutral)
Step 1: Create a Neutral Gray Ground
Begin by covering your canvas with a thin wash of medium gray created from black and white. This toned surface immediately removes the intimidating white canvas and provides a middle value from which you can build both lights and darks.
Allow the background to dry before beginning your painting.
Step 2: Block in the Large Shapes
Using your chosen color mixed with black and white, paint the major shadow and light shapes. Don’t worry about details yet—focus on the overall structure of the subject.

- Large shadow masses
- Midtones
- Highlight areas
Step 3: Build Form with Value
Gradually model the form by adding lighter and darker mixtures. Mix your third color with varying amounts of black and white to create a complete range of values.
Remember:
- Keep your brightest whites in reserve.
- Avoid using pure black too early.
- Let the middle values do most of the work.
Step 4: Save the Drama for Last
- Pure Titanium White only on the brightest highlights.
- Pure Mars Black only in the deepest shadows and accents.
These final touches create contrast and give the painting a dramatic sense of depth.

Try experimenting with different color choices. A blue monochromatic painting creates a cool, peaceful mood, while red feels dramatic and energetic. Green offers an earthy quality, purple creates richness, and yellow brings warmth and luminosity.
Remember—sometimes limiting your color choices actually expands your creativity. I can’t wait to see how each of you uses value, light, and one beautiful color to create a striking monochromatic painting!
